Motor
Bus re-introduced double-deck buses on route 51 on 24th August 2025, after a gap of
almost 27 years. The last and only double-deckers to operate the
route were specially adapted two-axle MCW Metrobuses
M81-M88, which operated between 1988 and 1998. It is believed that a batch of the 11.3 metre ADL 'facelift' Enviro500s have been modified to cope with the route, known as Route Twisk (Tsuen Wan/Shek Kong). These include E6M131 to E6M137. The following is an article published in The Standard:- "Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) will introduce double-decker buses on Route 51 starting August 24, replacing single-decker vehicles to meet anticipated increased demand from tourists visiting Tai Mo Shan during the peak hiking season. The upgrade will double the route's capacity to approximately 500 passengers per hour during peak periods. The enhanced service, connecting Tsuen Wan and Sheung Tsuen, comes after successful road tests conducted last month, confirming the suitability of double-decker buses for the route. Necessary preparations included extensive pruning along Route Twisk to clear overhanging branches while preserving major trees. In a social media announcement, the Transport Department highlighted its close coordination with franchised bus operators and relevant government departments to select appropriate double-decker models for the mountainous route. The move aims to improve transportation efficiency while maintaining safety standards for one of Hong Kong's most scenic bus routes. The capacity expansion responds to growing popularity of Tai Mo Shan as a hiking destination, particularly during cooler autumn months when visitor numbers typically surge. Route 51 serves as a crucial transport link for both tourists and local residents accessing the area's hiking trails and scenic spots." |
